What is God Looking for in Me?

Posted by Men of Redemption on December 16, 2010

I’ve oftentimes wonder myself what God really looks for in a man. I’ve heard it said many, many times: “God is looking for a man that loves Him” and “God wants a man that is willing to do whatever He asks.” Both of those statements hold a lot truth to them, but God truly has some specific request of man to identify his existence here on Earth.

As I was growing up in the church being involved in Sunday school, the Usher Board, Young Adult Bible Study, I saw a lot of men I thought were good role models in our church. I knew who they were. I knew their kids because we played together. But I always wondered, what does a real man of God look like and how does he act when it comes to the things of God?
My dad was a pastor for several years, but not until later in my adult years of life. He was a good man when it came to getting things done at home like cleaning up, repairing things, and starting new projects like gardens (ugh!). Hated garden season! But when it came to the things of God I didn’t see what I was looking for. I was looking for some type of leadership by example so that I could follow after. I had a desire to be mentored. I never got that while growing up. So instead, I was drawn to someone else, my uncle, my dad’s brother, and there began a rearing that enlightened my young adult life with years of issues that I am still fighting against to this day. Praise God I have found some help and God is restoring relationship and redefining my purpose in life.

Of all the things that I was looking for, I discovered that God is looking for righteousness in every man. The Bible says that “The Lord is righteous, He loves righteousness; His countenance beholds the upright.” (Psalm 11:7) God is looking for the same thing that He is: righteous! How can I, a man who has done so many things that have brought shame, guilt, and despair to his family, to others, and to God Himself, and expect God to still desire to find righteousness in me? In me? I seriously doubted it for years. But because of His dying on the Cross; because of He shed His blood for me; and because He rose from the dead for me, I now have that chance to be righteous and to live that abundant life He promised to me at His resurrection!
God cleansed me from my sinful lifestyle and removed me from the miry clay. He took all that insecurity, all that passivity, and lack of self-confidence and self-esteem, and turned into strength and victory in everything I do in life! I seek after righteousness daily because I want to glorify my Father, Jesus Christ, with my life.
I have learned, and still learning to put my trust in the Lord (Proverbs 3:5-7) and depend upon Him only for everything I need in this life and beyond. God knows the way for the righteous (Psalm 1:6) and He will never leave me nor forsake me (Hebrews 13:5).

So what does God look for: He looks for righteousness throughout the earth, seeking someone, anyone who thirst after righteousness and desires to follow Him as we deny ourselves. I try daily to deny myself and depend upon God for everything in my life. God blesses those who desire righteousness. It is a lifestyle; a commitment to change by His Spirit.
Let’s stop looking for the approval of man and seek the approval of God. Because if we seek God’s approval, we will find favor with Him and man as well.
Remember . . . “Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you.” (Matthew 6:33)
