Freedom: How Bad Do You Really Want it

I spend a lot of time working in the field of recovery, helping men overcome the battles and struggles of addictive behaviors that have overtaken their lives at some point. Their behaviors have gained dominion over their lives, their finances, their marriages and families, and they don’t have anywhere to turn because of the shame and guilt that so many of them still feel and carry around in their everyday lives. I’ve been one of those guys who has been through that season of disparity and it’s not funny at all. It’s critical when a man is at the breaking point, despair, in his life when he has lost everything he’s worked all his life, despite his behaviors, and watch it just disintegrates right before his eyes, knowing that his life is next in line. But there is hope, because I found it, and it helped me come out of that devastating lifestyle. It wasn’t easy. I didn’t have many of the resources we have today – the accountability, the support of others who had victory over their issues, the information available today, the Conquers Series, etc.. The resources for help are out there. The thing about it is that most men, and women, are filled with so much shame that they don’t have the courage to seek out that help, that resource because they don’t want to found out, especially by those who are loved ones. I, myself, had to go out seek that help, that resource on my own because why, because I wanted it! I wanted freedom from this tragic life of bondage. The more I sought the more I was guided to the help I really needed.

After getting the help I needed I discovered a renewed relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. I remember reading in the Word of God about being transformed into being who God created me to be and that was what answered my prayers for a better life than what I was living. I drew nearer to Him and He drew nearer to me. I know what God did in and for my life, so I know He’ll do the same for other men too. So I try to live my life with victory as I overcome daily. But I find that so many men and women are so comfortable with that behavior that they truly believe that God can’t break their chains and set them free. I could tell them my story until I’m black and blue in the face but still, the hearts of so many have been hardened by the sin, by the addictive mindset the enemy has overwhelmed them with that having that kind of faith is virtually impossible for them. Their belief system is all out of sorts, solely depending upon themselves and the mindset that them have form while they were in their behaviors. All of the behaviors that they were involved in: porn, lust, jealousy, hatred, infidelity and so on, they believe they really can’t win that battle. I’m here to tell you, those who are struggling for the answers, that Jesus Christ can give you the healing you need to overcome all of your struggles, no matter what you’re struggling with. The difference in getting that help: you gotta want it.

No chains! It’s not going to drop out of the sky and rest upon you, you have to go after it. Look at it this way – we went after that lifestyle and behavior with every ounce of energy we had and nothing stopped us, not even family, our jobs, even our spouses. So the questions is what is it that you really want as you look at your struggle today? What’s so important to you that if you committed yourself to it wholeheartedly it would radically change your life? Is it freedom from your addiction to __________? You fill in the blank and ask yourself do I want to be set free from this or continue in life as I am doing and continue to suffer the consequences until I have nothing left. The Lord Jesus Christ will break the chains that bind you, and set you free if you truly want it. Nobody can make that decision but you. So what are you gonna do? Will you make that decision today? Don’t procrastinate! Don’t play with sin! You’ll never win! It’ll cost you more than you’ll want to pay, and take you farther than you’ll want to go.

Just some thoughts from a brother who has been there in the battle, who has overcome, and continue to overcome this battle daily, but with structure and disciplines where there were none. I’ve found true freedom and actively walking in it consistently, daily! And I want to share this freedom with others who are struggling because I know God wants everyone walking in freedom and purity. Just saying . . . .

“I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. “Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
