My Thoughts on . . . .

Disobedience to God’s Word

Okay, so everybody can’t obey every word that’s in the Bible, even though all of us who are Christians are held accountable to every word. That’s true, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t try. I know through the course of history no one has actually obeyed every word that God holds us accountable to from His Word but Jesus Christ Himself. But we have to give credit where credit is due-there are many who have tried and continue in trying to follow His Word, to stay true to His commandments and statutes. Yeah it’s hard, but it’s only as hard as we make it. And God doesn’t expect us to try to keep His Word by our own human understanding. That’s why He has given us the Comforter, The Holy Spirit, to help us and bring all things to our remembrance (John 14:25, 26). With that being the case for helping us, what are some hindrances that are keeping us from doing what God says? Well, I struggle with obedience on a daily basis, not emphatically  disobeying God but missing out in many areas; blaming it on not enough time in the day, too busy, too tired, other things I’m tied to, etc.. I don’t think I need to go on so you see where I’m going with this.

I believe God’s Word is clear on obedience for the Christian follower if he or she makes it a part of their life to pick up His Word and read it for themselves. I know God doesn’t expect perfection, but He does expect submission and obedience. I think that’s where so many of us fail as true believers when we see that we’re not following God’s Word as we should. We allow that lack of understanding to be disguised as “pressure” and some of us tend to fall away from following His Word all together. But there are other hindrances that keep us in disobedience to God’s Word.

A few hindrances that come to mind are hidden agendas, addictive behaviors, habits, lack of faith, disbelief or lack thereof, secrets, etc. These hindrances have kept many people of God from obeying Him. I know, I had been one of those people in disobedience. But I had to realize what God’s Word said about this very important topic . . . .

Jesus talking to one of His disciples Judas (not Iscariot) . . . “Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him. He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine but the Father’s who sent Me.” (John 14:23, 24) So what appears to be the biggest reason why we are not obedient to God-it appears to be a question of whether or not we love our Savior. It’s sad to say for a believer but that’s where a lot of us are. If we love the Father, then we ought to obey His Word. In comparison to growing up, when our guardians told us to obey what they say we had a choice to be obedient or suffer the consequences for disobedience. God has consequences as well. A life led without obedience leads to doing life without His protection, His wisdom and understanding in all things, and not to mention we place ourselves in direct line of fire of the enemy. And any follower of Christ knows that is a dangerous place to be without God’s protection.

I believe its time for us followers of Christ to seriously take a look at our relationship with the heavenly Father. If we are not in obedience with His Word, then what and who are we obeying? We are obeying someone or something, and it’s up to us to make that distinction like yesterday. If any of those hindrances mentioned above are keeping you from obeying your Creator, ask the Father to give you strength and understanding to start getting real and intentional in your walk with Him. He’ll forgive you of your disobedience and help turn you around toward Him and His love. He is a loving and forgiving God. Don’t allow not loving God keep you from truly knowing Him. That’s what He desires in us is to love Him with all of our heart, mind and soul. He is love because He first loved us.

Just some thoughts from a man of God who desires for all of his brother and sisters in Christ to become obedient to the Word of God without fail. I know we’re not perfect or anywhere close to it, but we can come together and not allow the enemy of our souls to have dominion and power where Christ is supposed to reign. Let’s re-commit ourselves and do what’s right in God’s sight. Just saying . . . .

“But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the things which I say? Whoever comes to Me, and hears My sayings and does them, I will show you whom he is like: He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently against that house, and could not shake it, for it was founded on the rock. But he who heard and did nothing is like a man who built a house on the earth without a foundation, against which the stream beat vehemently; and immediately it fell. And the ruin of that house was great.”  –  Luke  6:46-49
