WHAT’S YOUR QUESTION TODAY?

Posted by Men of Redemption on May 29, 2017

MY QUESTION IS . . . .

How long is long enough to remain with a support group? I’ve been attending this one group faithfully for the last nine months and I’ve seen good progress in my life. I’ve asked my group leader how long I should stay in the group but he hasn’t given me a clear answer and I don’t want to stay in the group forever. So how long should I remain in the group if my progression shows I’m doing well?

This is one of the most consistent questions that is asked from every man going into support group setting. Even before they put their hands on the curriculum they’re going to use, even before they attend their first group meeting. And believe me, this is something every group leader knows and expects from first time arrivals to their groups. I try to share with the guys that this should not be a question that hovers at the front of their minds. You see, your emphasis is already on the end when you haven’t even began the group. We want that energy, that focus to be centered and enforced at the beginning of your journey to recovery. It’s not about how long should you stay, it’s about what are getting out of the group, it’s curriculum and it’s accountability efforts that making a difference in your life. Your group should be impacting your life on extreme levels so that your life is changing, transforming and evolving into the creative design that God created you to be. If the group has influenced your perspective on life, helped you identify who you are in Christ, and you are walking in healing daily and consistently, chances are that leaving or concerns about leaving won’t be at the forefront of your mind or heart. If God has, and is doing what you’ve been praying for, you’ll not want to concern yourself about leaving but what and how you can invite another brother to come and receive what you have received. When you have received and are walking in your healing, I’ve known guys to not want to leave but stay and help the group, become a part of the leadership team, or even take the program they’ve just completed to their church and start a group there. So it depends on what you’re expecting to achieve when you complete the curriculum. Even more importantly, it’s about what God is saying to you or speaking to you about and what He wants you to do when you complete the program. Don’t base your success on how well you think or believe you’re doing but what is God saying to you and what He wants you to do. God has purpose for each and every one of us, and His thoughts and ways are far above ours(Isaiah 55:8), so finished the program or curriculum, and while you’re doing that continue to pray and ask God what it is that He wants you to do when you’ve completed it. You might be surprised at the answer. I surely was!!

My Daily Devotion – DON’T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT IT!

Posted by Men of Redemption on May 8, 2017

START YOUR DAY OFF WITH GOD’S WORD!

Today’s Reading:

Proverbs 3:1-26 . . . .

“My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart, for they will prolong your life many years and bring you peace and prosperity. Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man. Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil. This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones. Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine. My son, do not despise the Lord’s discipline, and do not resent his rebuke, because the Lord disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in. Blessed are those who find wisdom, those who gain understanding, for she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold. She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her. Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor. Her ways are pleasant ways, and all her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her; those who hold her fast will be blessed. By wisdom the Lord laid the earth’s foundations, by understanding he set the heavens in place; by his knowledge the watery depths were divided, and the clouds let drop the dew. My son, do not let wisdom and understanding out of your sight, preserve sound judgment and discretion; they will be life for you, an ornament to grace your neck. Then you will go on your way in safety, and your foot will not stumble. When you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet. Have no fear of sudden disaster or of the ruin that overtakes the wicked, for the Lord will be at your side and will keep your foot from being snared.”

START YOUR DAY OFF WITH GOD’S WORD!

Today’s Reading:

Psalm 103:1-22 . . . .

“Bless the Lord, O my soul; And all that is within me, bless His holy name! Bless the Lord, O my soul, And forget not all His benefits: Who forgives all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases, Who redeems your life from destruction, Who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies, Who satisfies your mouth with good things, So that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s. The Lord executes righteousness And justice for all who are oppressed. He made known His ways to Moses, His acts to the children of Israel. The Lord is merciful and gracious, Slow to anger, and abounding in mercy. He will not always strive with us, Nor will He keep His anger forever. He has not dealt with us according to our sins, Nor punished us according to our iniquities. For as the heavens are high above the earth, So great is His mercy toward those who fear Him; As far as the east is from the west, So far has He removed our transgressions from us. As a father pities his children, So the Lord pities those who fear Him. For He knows our frame; He remembers that we are dust. As for man, his days are like grass; As a flower of the field, so he flourishes. For the wind passes over it, and it is gone, And its place remembers it no more. But the mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting On those who fear Him, And His righteousness to children’s children, To such as keep His covenant, And to those who remember His commandments to do them. The Lord has established His throne in heaven, And His kingdom rules over all. Bless the Lord, you His angels, Who excel in strength, who do His word, Heeding the voice of His word. Bless the Lord, all you His hosts, You ministers of His, who do His pleasure. Bless the Lord, all His works, In all places of His dominion. Bless the Lord, O my soul!”

RECOVERY TIP FOR THIS WEEK – FOCUS ON THIS!

Posted by Men of Redemption on May 1, 2017

BEING TRANSPARENT – NOBODY CAN BE THE BEST YOU BUT YOU!

How many know who you are? I’m serious!! How many people know exactly who you are? Now that’s a question that many of us take for granted because we automatically assume that everyone in our sphere of influence knows exactly who we are. But in a lot of cases there is some false pretense there and it could be a loaded question .

Well, for one thing, people who “know” us have a good perception of who we are, and it’s due to the fact that they have spent significant time with us in a lot of situations we face daily. They have seen us angry and upset; they have experienced us go through some emotional ups and downs; they have observed us under stress and pressures that bring out the good and the bad in us. Yes, people have seen us at our best and at our worst. But let me ask you this . . . . Do people really “Know” who you are from the inside? Let me go deeper.

How many people in your life know your deepest struggles in life, and I’m talking about temptations, indecision, weaknesses, hurts or trauma from your past, secrets that you’ve never told anyone ever? Some of us may have one or two people in our lives that know maybe one or two of those concerns. That’s good! But I believe everyone ought to know us for who we actually are, and that’s going to take a lot of vulnerability and courage to overcome. I’m not saying to open up our lives to every Tom-Dick & Harry that comes along our journey. What I am saying is that those of us who have struggle with identity, knowing and understanding who we are in this life, we need to begin the process of sharing with those we trust and value as friends and close brothers and begin to share our inter-most feelings with them and let them know what’s going on inside of us. Some of us have issues concerning opening up to others because of what we’ve gone through, the pain and hurt we’ve experience, and we basically feel that it’s none of anybody’s business from the get go. There is some truth to that. But how long will that be kept that up and not address those issues and concerns by getting some help with those issues. As long as we continue to hold on to our pains, our hurts, our shame and our guilt, we’ll never overcome those issues and we’ll be stuck there in life back there. Where is God in all of this? After all, didn’t Jesus Christ die for all of this? Our sins, our pains and hurts, these are the very things that are keeping so many of us from moving forward. I sought out help to get some understanding about who I was, why am I feeling like I do, and how can I get past this. I want people to know me for who I am, and not just what they see. Yeah, we all go through some things in our lives and many of us can’t overcome them because the pain is too much; the hurts are too much bare again. But for those of us who are in recovery, as you begin to learn about transparency and understand that process, and allow God to minister to your hurts and pains, He will heal you of that and you’ll begin to walk in that healing by being you. Nobody can be the best you but you! So if you’re still struggling with not letting who you are shine because of the issues aforementioned, I encourage you to seek out some help and get some understanding and begin to deal with those issues. Moving forward is what we want to do while in recovery. These issues can be barriers and distractions can and will prohibit us from progression ultimately failure in all of our efforts.

WHAT’S INSIDE OF US WILL ULTIMATELY FIND ITS WAY OUT THOUGH OUR MOUTHS: LET’S BE CAREFUL ABOUT WHAT WE SAY TO ONE ANOTHER

Conversations with others, reacting to others, advising others, this is what we do as human beings through communication. It may sound elementary, even idiotic if you see yourself as far more mature than this after reading something like this. You’re probably thinking ” My kids even understand this!” Rightfully so. But think about this for a minute . . . . Do we ever actually stop and realize what’s coming out of mouths when we speak? We’re so in tuned with getting things out, giving orders or instructions, making things clear and concise to those we think or believe my not understand. But do we consider how we say it, the tone of what we say and the posture in which we say it? All of these things have a lot to do with the words that come out of mouths. God’s Word is very specific about how we as children of God ought to speak to one another and the things we say. We all have so much going on and we can be driven by what’s inside of us. It could be anger; it could frustration; it could be hatred. On the other hand it could be disappointment; it could be pain or heartache; it could be hurt of trauma. Either way, whatever is inside of us will eventually manifest itself. Our words, the things we say to one another has tremendous impact on those we communicate with. A lot of times we say things out of the things mentioned previously-pain, hurt, anger, etc.-and they come out negatively onto those who weren’t expecting it or deserve it. Is that fair? Not at all! If something is going on inside of us, we ought to be aware that we shouldn’t take things out on others because of what’s happening inside of us. We can cause considerable damage to unsuspecting friends, family members, our spouses, our co-workers, and how they receive it can alter someone’s day, their thoughts, their hearts towards us, even cause emotional disconnect. No matter what’s going on with us we have to also realize that we can speak kind, considerate words to others and at the same time we speak negatively, cursing and degrading others and this should not be friends. We need some disciplines in our lives so that our words don’t hurt one another no matter what’s going on inside of us. There are things we can do to help us in this struggle because it is for some. What’s going on with the person who uses profanity every other word that comes out of his or mouth? What’s going on with a person who has nothing but negative or disappointing comments or remarks  to everything? A lot is going on with that person. We don’t know their struggles or what it could be, but we can make a difference by watching what we say to others and being considerate of their feelings as to what we say to them. Some are more sensitive to what say than others. Let’s be mindful of our word and what we say or share.

IN CHRIST WE ARE NO LONGER SLAVES TO SIN BUT SLAVES TO RIGHTEOUSNESS AND HOLINESS

Are you struggling in areas of your life where you just can’t seem to be free from? Or maybe you having to battle the issues of addictive behaviors and have been for quite some time and  just want to be free from that lifestyle? I know I’ve used words that sound like war-battle, struggle, slaves-and I used those words because when you’re dealing with kinds of issues in life that’s exactly what it is, a war! And if for one minute you even think there’s no truth to that statement you’re allowing yourself to be deceived big time! If we look at our lives today, whatever we love the most in life that’s what we are a slave to. If its money, pleasure, material things, sex, whatever, we are a slave to its every desire. It transforms us, it shapes our mindset, and it leads us down a road spiraling out of control which will eventually lead to destruction, even death. We are blinded by the rewards, the “high” of obtaining it through the process it creates. I know what these things will do because I’ve faced those challenges over the course of my brief life and it had led me down that road, almost to the brink of death. But because of God’s Word, as I read and studied how His love and grace has and is saving me daily, I am no longer a slave to that lifestyle but a slave unto holiness and righteousness. Christ died for my sins that I committed by going to the Cross, shedding His blood and raising from the dead so that I might have life eternal with Him and no longer be bound by sin, by those things that had kept me from living a life free of those behaviors that had ensnared me for years. I am a slave to righteousness in Christ now. I no longer desire those things but desire holiness, peace, the comfort of Christ in safety of His loving arms. I no longer desire the things that made me crave pleasure and more of it. Now, I desire to be conformed in the image of Jesus Christ and the entire process that it takes because it involves seeking Him with my whole heart, mind and soul. I get into His Word daily, and trust Him to do in me what He began before the foundations of the earth were formed-and that’s create me, design me and conform me to be like His Son. And being a slave to righteousness brings hope and desire that cannot be attained by human hands, but only by the hands of Almighty God Himself, Jesus Christ. I’m free, living and walking in that freedom today because I chose the only to be set free from what I was going. I’m a slave for righteousness in Jesus Christ, and that, my friends is true freedom!

My Daily Devotion – DON’T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT IT!

START YOUR DAY OFF WITH GOD’S WORD!

Today’s Reading:

Colossians 2:1-10 . . . .

“For I want you to know what a great conflict I have for you and those in Laodicea, and for as many as have not seen my face in the flesh, that their hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love, and attaining to all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the knowledge of the mystery of God, both of the Father and of Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. Now this I say lest anyone should deceive you with persuasive words. For though I am absent in the flesh, yet I am with you in spirit, rejoicing to see your good order and the steadfastness of your faith in Christ. As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving. Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ. For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily; and you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power.”

GUIDE MY ATTITUDE AND MOTIVES TO GLORIFY YOU GOD AND NOT MYSELF

Today, I place myself under the authority and guidance of you Heavenly Father to lead me in seeking you with my whole heart, mind, body and spirit; I need your mercy and grace to keep me focused on you, your Word, with true and honest intentions. Holy Spirit, instruct me on how to seek the Father without centering on myself but others and the kingdom of God; give me the right attitude and motive to live in harmony with others so I might not seek an advantage or take form others what is not mine. I will trust and depend upon you O God to deliver me from my selfish desires and focus on what you want me to do this day, to glorify you in all I do. Help me to seek wisdom and instruction in your Word that I might learn what it means to have the right mindset, to trust you totally, and move forward with power, victory and authority in Jesus’ Name! So Father God, I will trust in you to do as you will in and for my life this day moving forward no matter what I face; You are my Savior, my Lord, and I will follow you.

WE KNOW GOD BY KEEPING HIS WORD, DOING WHAT HE SAYS.

Okay men and women of God, let’s get real now. As people of the Most High God, the Lord Jesus Christ, we know that God’s Word is our road map of life. The Word of God is filled with promises, instruction and guidelines that will fulfill our lives with purpose, intentionality and abundance. But our Heavenly Father does require His children to know Him, and that comes by getting into His Word and knowing Him intimately, and doing what the Word of God says. We all know that there are so many so-called “Christians” that claim they know the Father but their lives show us different. We don’t see the change, the transformation of heart and the renewing of the mind that comes when we finally understand what a relationship with God means and does. We will do what His Word instructs us to do. We become obedient to His will, desiring to please Him, to live in such a manner that see our hearts and knows we have Him in our hearts and lives. We are doing what His Word tells us and instructs us to do, hands down! But we cannot keep talking about knowing the Father if our live don’t demonstrate it. Normally, the way we lead our lives on a daily basis reveal who we follow, who and what our faith is in. So what do we have to do to make sure we’re doing what we ought to be doing? First, take a long look in the mirror and ask ourselves . . . “Am I really doing what God Word tells me to do? Am I understanding what it is that God desires of me and from me? What am I doing that’s keeping me from doing and following His Word?” I strongly believe when we can honestly answer these questions we will make a conscious decision and start doing the right thing when it comes to adhering to God Word. No, we won’t do or consume everything but we ought to start and trust God in teaching and guiding us by His Holy Spirit because He left the Holy Spirit here for that specific purpose-to lead and guide us, and to bring all things to remembrance that He has taught us. So what are we waiting on? If you’re not doing what the Word tells you to do then His Word says we really don’t know Him. Start knowing Him today by beginning to read His Word and start doing what His Word says.

My Daily Devotion – DON’T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT IT!

Posted by Men of Redemption on April 17, 2017

START YOUR DAY OFF WITH GOD’S WORD!

Today’s Reading:

1 John 2:3-11 . . . .

“Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him.  He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked. Brethren, I write no new commandment to you, but an old commandment which you have had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which you heard from the beginning. Again, a new commandment I write to you, which thing is true in Him and in you, because the darkness is passing away, and the true light is already shining. He who says he is in the light, and hates his brother, is in darkness until now. He who loves his brother abides in the light, and there is no cause for stumbling in him. But he who hates his brother is in darkness and walks in darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.”
