My Morning Devotion – Making God The Priority

A CALL TO PERSEVERE Image result for a call to persevere

From The Book of Titus 1:17-23 . . . .

But, dear friends, remember what the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ foretold. They said to you, “In the last times there will be scoffers who will follow their own ungodly desires.” These are the people who divide you, who follow mere natural instincts and do not have the Spirit. But you, dear friends, by building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in God’s love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life. Be merciful to those who doubt; save others by snatching them from the fire; to others show mercy, mixed with fear-hating even the clothing stained by corrupted flesh.

A Writer’s Thoughts on . . . .

BELIEVING THE LIE INSTEAD OF TRUSTING IN THE TRUTH Image result for BELIEVING THE LIE

As I continue to work and minister with men in recovery, I see a familiar pattern of uncertainty and a lack of belief in the process. Going into recovery I try to prepare them for the battle against the enemy of our souls, Satan, and his will to influence men that Christ won’t do what He says He will do and for some reason, it’s given some attention. They know the struggle is real, and they can’t do recovery on their own as proven throughout history according to the experts in the study of addictive behaviors. Even myself when I was in my “mess” I tried to do recovery, make needed changes, do the right thing, but I failed every time. So having that experience of failure, knowing what it looks like in not being able to succeed in recovery, I’ve used that season in my life as an example to let men know that I’ve been there and that I’ve learned and continued to learn that accountability is strongly needed and essential to the recovery process. But there is a stigma that is attached to every recovery journey that most seems to dwell on the lie that my recovery won’t happen because of all the shame and guilt that I’ve caused and infiltrated into the lives of others and myself. That is a lie from Satan himself and from the pits of hell! Satan knows that Jesus Christ is the answer to all situations, problems, and recovery success, and he wants to distort or influence us into not believing Him or the process involved. We can see an example of God’s Word regarding the negative influence that Satan had on creation in the beginning with Adam and Eve.

Image result for adam and eveNow the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’” “You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”   –  Genesis 3:1-5

When men come to the end of themselves where they have nowhere else to turn but up, they’re faced with no other choice but to cry out. I’ve been there. They get into a men’s support group, usually by a recommendation from a counselor, Pastor or friend, and the recovery journey starts. But as the journey begins, the enemy is right there observing that man because he has “sifted” him knowing he isn’t strong enough to take on this important challenge he’s about to embark on. With the recovery facilitators and group leaders in one ear, and the enemy in the other, the man is confused and often disoriented about his decision to make this venture happen. His thoughts are how can this happen or is this real, and this is a waste of time. If he goes into recovery thinking like this, how much harder is it for those of us who are committed to helping him if the decision to not succeed has already been made? This is where we who are working to help the men have to understand where they are, where we were in our mess, and let them know we are there for them, and we’re trusting God, not the lie that has been spoken over them by the enemy. Being there involves understanding their struggles and defining where the lie began. Bringing truth to his struggles is embarrassing, to say the least, but it must happen. With Adam and Eve, God brought truth and reality back into focus. Image result for adam and eve

“When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves. Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?” He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.” And he said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?” The man said, “The woman you put here with me—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.” Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.””   –  Genesis 3:6-13

This is exactly what happens to us who have struggled or are struggling with addictive behaviors. We believed the lie. We were convinced and influenced that it wasn’t as bad as it seems or appears. Everything looks good, nobody will get hurt or would even be involved because it only involved me. We see how the lie distorts and influences our thoughts. When the truth comes to the forefront, that’s when the shame and guilt take effect, and just like a turtle when he wants to protect himself he ducks back into his shell not wanting to be seen to avoid exposure. Those of us who work with men in recovery have a difficult task ahead of us as some already know. But the challenge remains-doing everything we can as facilitators, group leaders, counselors, pastors, and lay-ministers, to help men understand and trust God, and not believe the lie because that’s exactly what that is, an untruth, deception, just a flat-out LIE!!

ALL OF US HAVE A CALLING: SO DON’T ALLOW EXCUSES TO HINDER THAT CALLING

Have you ever asked God what your calling is on your life? Or maybe you don’t even know there is a calling for your life, and it has a purpose you weren’t even aware of. Well, we do! God just didn’t create human being just for the sole purpose of creation. He has a purpose, a plan, because he knew what the world was going to be like, especially when He gave us all the gift of free will. God knew that every created being was going to live life as they perceived it in their own minds. But He also created a small part in our hearts that’s especially designed for us to commune with Him, and that part has been infiltrated with worldly thinking, worldly concepts among other things we allowed to influence. No matter, God has intended purpose and calling on all of His creation and we cannot run from it. Some of hear God calling everyday, and yet we look for reason, for excuse to avoid acknowledging Him or run from His calling. We say things like . . . . “Who was that saying that? “Something keeps telling I should be doing that!” Or “This thing has been on my mind since I could remember!” Chances are, that’s God still trying to get our attention and make known His calling to us. Then we have some of us who know what God is saying to us and we feel we’re not good enough to do what He asks or requires of us. For whatever reason, we believe we’re inadequate, not qualified, and we look for a reason to tell Him maybe He has the wrong person. I’ve got news for you-God knows what He wants, who He wants and exactly what He wants that individual what to do. He will not call anyone to anything without equipping them to handle the tasks He ordains. There were many people in the Bible that portrayed the same mentality and mindset. What causes someone to run or attempt to avoid their calling-many things. Just to name a few- fear, lack of trust, sin, doubt and so on. Any of these has worked for so many since the beginning of time. How about you? Do you recognize any of these examples? Are you running from your calling from the Lord God, your creator? We can’t run from God, nor can we hide from Him. What He starts and begins in you He will complete, trust me on this. One day, some how, some way, He will get our attention, and hopefully we ill acknowledge Him and say . . . . “Yes Lord, I’m sorry for running. Here I am Lord, send me!”

Read Your Word This Morning? – DON’T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT IT!!

read-your-word

DON’T ALLOW DOUBT TO DISTRACT WHO JESUS IS TO YOU!

In reading God’s Word, do you ever run across some of the people you read about where doubt is prevalent in their belief? I can tell you I see it all the time. It seems that in many situations doubt always seems to raise its ugly head when our faith is put to the test. In Matthew 14, Jesus had just finished feeding the five thousand people who were hearing Him bring the Word and teaching them when He instructed the disciples to get into their boat and go before Him and meet Him on the other side. There was the tossing and turning of the waves of the sea, which caused the boat to become uncontrollable. The disciples appeared afraid, including Peter, but they saw Jesus from a distance and immediately “thought” He was a ghost! It was clear in verse 26 that the disciples knew it was Jesus and the Word said they were “troubled” and fear came upon them. Now if they knew it was Jesus why would they think or assume that he might be a ghost? Could it be that it was dark, late at night, that their perception of Him distorted their view and they couldn’t identify Him? Maybe. But if they were secure in knowing who Jesus was, and is, they would have no doubt as to who He was even in the midst of a storm or even in trouble. How about you? Does doubt or distraction seem at the forefront of your thinking when it comes to our Heavenly Father in times of struggle or trouble? When I spend time in the Word, I learn about being comforted in His love and grace that no matter what comes before me I know that He is near. He promised in His Word that He would never leave me nor forsake me at any time (Hebrews 13:5). There is no room for doubt or distraction no matter what comes my way. The power of His Word extinguishes the doubt, the distractions because He is always there even right in the very middle of my storms. But in order to have that comfort I need to engulf myself in His Word daily and trust Him that He is always by our side. Jesus is Lord always, so I don’t allow doubt or distraction to rise in your mind or heart when I’m troubled or in a difficult situation. Trust the Lord God to comfort you, and doubt will never raise its head when you rest in His love.

DevotionsToday’s Reading: John 20:20-31 says . . . .

“Now Thomas, called the Twin, one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. The other disciples therefore said to him, “We have seen the Lord.” So he said to them, “Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe.” And after eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus came, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, “Peace to you!” Then He said to Thomas, “Reach your finger here, and look at My hands; and reach your hand here, and put it into My side. Do not be unbelieving, but believing.” And Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said to him, “Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.

What is your “Unless I see . . . ” to know that Jesus is alive to you in your life?

Today, I Will Trust God To . . . .

. . . . To Help My Unbelief

Father God, the Lord of lords and King of kings, I pray this day that you would grant me the strength  to trust you to help my unbelief; though I struggle with trusting you to handle to difficulties of the details of my life, help me to depend and know that you will do all that you say you will do; that I know beyond the shadow of a doubt that you are who you say you are. Remove the doubt, and cast down any vain imaginations that appear to be you, and reveal your Word to me with clarity and truth so I would cling to your righteousness; Renew my mind and my thoughts so that I would have no doubt of your goodness, your holiness, because you are God Almighty, the Lord Jesus Christ.

DevotionsToday’s Reading: Matthew  14:22-33

“Immediately Jesus made His disciples get into the boat and go before Him to the other side, while He sent the multitudes away. And when He had sent the multitudes away, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray. Now when evening came, He was alone there. But the boat was now in the middle of the sea, tossed by the waves, for the wind was contrary. Now in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went to them, walking on the sea. And when the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, “It is a ghost!” And they cried out for fear. But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid.” And Peter answered Him and said, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.” So He said, “Come.” And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus. But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!” And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. Then those who were in the boat came and worshiped Him, saying, “Truly You are the Son of God.”

Keeping our focus on Christ and not our circumstances will keep us from sinking in life.

Today’s Point of Focus:

When we keep our minds and hearts on Christ, doubt has little chance to survive.

Read Your Word This Morning?

Posted by Men of Redemption on May 19, 2016

Breakfast of ChampionsEvery time I read my Word, I get the refreshing desire of God’s love and overwhelming faithfulness in His Word. I mean, I feel so empowered to live for Him, to go out into my world and proclaim His goodness and mercy to all I know! When I read about the things He desires me to do, it makes me feel like . . . “Wow God, You want me to do that?” And then He goes on to show how He will do it through me by supplying all that I need to get it accomplished. Despite how unqualified I may feel I am, or the doubt I would have in my own ability to do His work, he still makes it very clear He will do it in me if I just give Him the opportunity to use me. I learned through reading His Word that I did not choose God, He chose me. Get into your Word today, and get to know your Creator in a real, special way!

His Word For Me Today Through My . . . .

Posted by Men of Redemption on January 30, 2015

devotionsFEAR OR FAITH

“Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone, and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it. Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear. But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” “Lord, if it’s you,”Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.” “Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?” And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.””   –   MATTHEW 14:22-33
