My Morning Devotion – Making God The Priority

Posted by Men of Redemption on February 9, 2018

From The Book of 1 John 2:3-11 . . . .

“Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him. He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked. Brethren, I write no new commandment to you, but an old commandment which you have had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which you heard from the beginning. Again, a new commandment I write to you, which thing is true in Him and in you, because the darkness is passing away, and the true light is already shining. He who says he is in the light, and hates his brother, is in darkness until now. He who loves his brother abides in the light, and there is no cause for stumbling in him. But he who hates his brother is in darkness and walks in darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.

Read Your Word This Morning?

Posted by Men of Redemption on June 3, 2016

Breakfast of ChampionsDon’t ever allow reading God’s Word to become a task that you “have” to do or you “gotta” read His Word. Having an attitude like that only defeats our purpose in trying to know our Heavenly Father. God doesn’t want us to learn and know about Him because we have to. On the contrary, He wants us to desire reading His Word, coming into relationship with the Creator of the Universe! He’s not so busy or too occupied that He doesn’t care about the details of our lives. He wants us to know that He treasures us, that He loves us beyond measure. Once we begin to see the character of God in Christ Jesus, the love He has for people, both good and bad, we’ll develop compassion for the same things our Lord God has for them and us. So when we read His Word, have an attitude of gratefulness and thankfulness that we have a Heavenly Father God who desires us to know Him relationally. We should want to know God for who He is, our Creator, the Author and Finisher of our faith (Hebrews 12:2). Get into His Word and know the Lord Jesus Christ for yourself today!

Read Your Word This Morning?

Posted by Men of Redemption on May 19, 2016

Breakfast of ChampionsEvery time I read my Word, I get the refreshing desire of God’s love and overwhelming faithfulness in His Word. I mean, I feel so empowered to live for Him, to go out into my world and proclaim His goodness and mercy to all I know! When I read about the things He desires me to do, it makes me feel like . . . “Wow God, You want me to do that?” And then He goes on to show how He will do it through me by supplying all that I need to get it accomplished. Despite how unqualified I may feel I am, or the doubt I would have in my own ability to do His work, he still makes it very clear He will do it in me if I just give Him the opportunity to use me. I learned through reading His Word that I did not choose God, He chose me. Get into your Word today, and get to know your Creator in a real, special way!

Read Your Word This Morning?

Posted by Men of Redemption on May 4, 2016

Breakfast of Champions

One of the most important strategies I implement when reading God’s Word is trying to read it with purpose and intentionality. It’s one thing to pick up God’s Word and just begin to read it, then say you’ve read a chapter of two, maybe three on a good day. But what I try to do is get involved with the characters of the Bible I’m reading about. I put myself in their place and ask God to show me what should I do in their situation. I ask God what is it that He is trying to tell me or say to me, and how can I learn and apply His Word to my life, to the situations and struggles I face on a daily basis. But I also want to get to know God on a more personal level, finding out who He is, and what He expects of me and from me. I know it’s a lot to decipher in reading or studying His Word, but if I take reading His Word seriously as I should, I will come to know my Savior in a more personal, relational manner, and keeping holy and reverent acknowledgement to His deity and omnipresent being.

To Know God is to Know His Word

Posted by Men of Redemption on May 8, 2014

To Know God I’m thankful, grateful and blessed that I am a follower of Jesus Christ.
It was the best decision that I have ever made in my life and that decision has brought me so much peace and unspeakable joy. But it also has brought me some challenges and struggles that I didn’t expect or was prepared for early on in my relationship with Him even though His Word told me that there would be. The Christian life is not an easy life to live because it requires all of your being to be surrendered to Christ and He will lead, guide, comfort and establish our steps in life. That was the one thing I had to understand and realize, to give up running my life and allow Christ to make all my decisions, to direct the pattern of my life and where I will be going as well as trusting in His Word and not leaning to my own understanding. In other words, there was no more me but all of Him. His Word tells me that “He must increase and I must decrease” (John 3:30). I understood that there had to be more of Christ in my life than there was of me. At that time in my life I was running rampant just like any 16 year old young was, doing what I wanted to do thinking I was grown not knowing anything really. But I wanted to know about God, who He was, and what He had planned for me and my life in Him.
For years I kept reading His Word, trying to understand the Bible, its’ truths and principles for Christ-like living. But I was missing something – my heart wasn’t in it. I carried the name of Christian and for several years that was all I did was walk around in name only, never really doing what I was supposed to be applying. Sure, it looked good in front everyone, attending church a couple times a week, singing in the choir, a member of the young adult usher board. I thought I was doing good with my walk with Christ. But I soon discovered that my walk was simply that, a walk, not fulfilling anything but affirmation from others. When I took a real, hard look at myself, I realized that I wasn’t doing anything worthy of my Christian faith because I was doing God for myself. I wasn’t doing His will in my life, let alone in the earth. I didn’t know Christ. I thought I had the knowledge because I was reading the Bible everyday but I wasn’t applying it, wasn’t doing what His Word instructed me to do. I didn’t know God. And the only way I was going to know God was to know His Word. Knowing God’s Word was something I had to acknowledge, accept and proclaim in my life daily without reservation. I had to learn to meditate on His Word, study His Word diligently and get to know the person of Jesus Christ.

“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” – 2 Timothy 2:15

Stay in God's Word

What I was doing before I realized the error of my ways was glorifying self, receiving the praise and adoration of others because of my committed service in the church. Yeah, it looked good to everyone but inside I wasn’t the man that I presented myself to be. I was lacking study time in His Word; I wasn’t praying daily as I should’ve; but I was going out partying every Saturday night with some of the very same people I was going to church with and then heading to church the next morning with them. WOW! Is that doing what God would want me to do? Of course not! And I know some of you may say “It’s not my fault. I was growing up and didn’t know better. We all go through that.” Well, I did say that myself, but it comes a time when we have to accept responsibility for our own conduct in the things of God. And because of those choices and decisions that I made, I paid for those choices and it wasn’t pretty at all. The consequences of that “life” lead me down a road of perdition and struggle for years because I didn’t take the time to know God’s Word and who He was. Now, many years later, and more committed to my faith, I now realize that the key to knowing God is knowing His Word. It’s unfortunate that I had to learn about God that way but we I’m living in disobedience, that’s the results that comes out of it for me to learn the lessons of life when Christ is at the head of my life. I now have learned to apply His Word to my life by doing His Word and experiencing for myself so that my witness will have some effectiveness and victory. I want to be a “doer” of the Word and not just a hearer of the Word.

“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” – James 1:22

My desire these days is to know God even more today than I knew Him the day before, and to know Him more tomorrow than I did yesterday. This was not a process that happened overnight. I had to go through some things in my life so that Christ could show me who He was. He had been right there all the time while I was in disobedience, watching over my every step, making sure that the lessons I needed to learn was right before me. Yes, those lessons were hard, and it took a lot of discipline on my part from God to make me see the light. I’m thankful for His grace that He showed me. Sometimes it takes a lot to get a lot. Now, Christ orders and establishes my steps; He leads me unto all truth and understanding; and I’m knowing Him more and more each and every day. I’m committed for the rest of my life to cause of Christ! How about you Christian Man and Woman of God? Are you committed to knowing the Savior whose name you committed to carry around in this life? Do you know who you serve and are you trying to know Him more and more daily? I want to encourage you my brothers and sisters, spend more time in the Word and know who you Heavenly Father is. He’s so much more than we think or believe He is. The only way you’ll find out is pick up His Word, the Bible, and read about Him who is the Alpha and Omega, Beginning and the End, the Author and Finisher of our faith, Jesus Christ!
